So what is a domain name? A domain name is the name of your website and it is essentially the address where people can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying your site on the internet. Now the question becomes how to set up a blog domain.
That’s where things start to get a tiny bit more complicated….
Write a blog my friends said. ‘It’ll be great,’ they said.. ‘You’ll love it!’ they said… And I believed them. What they didn’t mention was how f***ing complicated setting up a blog is, or how stressful. ‘How hard could it be though?’ I naively thought. Everyone’s got a blog these days, and I have a masters degree, I’ll fly through the process… How wrong I was.
First of all, you need to choose a web hosting platform and a domain name for your blog.
What’s that image? A time lapse of stars in the night sky.
What is a domain name?
Earlier when we discussed what is a domain name, we talked about how it is the address of your website.
You want the domain name to be special.
Not just any name, ohhhh no.
After much discussion I have realized the domain name you embrace has to be unique; it has to be entertaining, it HAS to be engaging. Only then can you start setting up a domain.
At this point I was thinking I’m not looking for my future life partner here, what does it matter? Surely a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?
I began to draw parallels in this name finding process to my life outside of coding and the London dating scene… And of course, as with dating, when you do finally find the perfect one, it’s taken, and you’re back to square one.
I am only trying to write a blog for goodness sake!
Ok so now you know what is a domain name lets start setting up a blog domain!
Setting up a blog domain
Finally having landed on a name, you then have to register it in multiple places (.com, .co.uk, .eu etc. etc., etc.) and are bombarded by ‘optional’ add-ons, web-hosting, spam protection, emails, templates, special features, the right to remain silent, the list goes on.
I put the optional in quotation marks as along the way it is made abundantly clear to you that if you don’t take them your blog will be infiltrated and you’re life ruined by some force beyond my comprehension. My solution to this predicament was, of course, to say yes to everything and hand over my credit card details. What else is a sensible person to do?
The more astute among you will have realized that I did survive this ordeal and am now the proud owner of a fully functioning blog! Welcome.
How do you set up a blog domain?
After the domain is decided upon and set up, it gets a lot more interesting.
Now it’s time to set up the blog. Here, in a similar way to web hosting providers, you have a lot of different options. Several people I know use Squarespace because of its flexible themes which they consider to be more beautiful. However, I chose to go with WordPress because of the breadth of easily added plugins, or extras.
I was then able to move on to choosing my WordPress theme and customizing the layout to represent my ‘personal brand best.’
Theme editing is much more my thing, though I admit it can be frustrating when the customizing options are limited. Maybe when I get more advanced in coding, I’ll create a customized template… Probably not. Anyway, this is what I settled on, what do you think? I think it communicates my mix of quirky humor and tech.
What I mean by that is I got to the point where I couldn’t be bothered to work on it anymore. Any ideas on what I can use for the main image will be much appreciated!
Next, I did some research online, watched a few simple tutorials and downloaded some WordPress plugins. These included the Yoast search engine optimization and Akismet Anti-Spam.
