Nowadays we are always switched on.

Sometimes you need be able to switch off and take a break.

Today we’re going to dive into 5 ways that you can combat some of the negative effects of technology.

Why we want to combat the negative effects of technology

Recent studies have shown that our current obsession with technology is harming our mental wellbeing.

Recent studies have shown technology can harm:

  • Education: The distractions available online can impact the quality of education received
  • Social Skills: Having a vast amount of communication go through social media
  • Privacy: As we put more outline, we are at risk of having our privacy breached
  • Mental wellbeing: Being connected through technology can hurt wellbeing
  • Physical fitness: By choosing to spend time online and sat down, we are becoming less physically healthy.

Many people have highlighted how they feel disconnected from their communities.

And this is happening in a time where we are supposedly even more connected than ever.

It’s time to get out of the negative spiral with technology.

Here are 5 tips that have helped me and I hope you’ll find useful too.

1/ Go outside and enjoy it

That headline makes it sound like I’m ordering you to get out.

I don’t want to come across so aggressive but trust me, getting outside and being connected to the world around you can really help.

When I feel like the negative impacts of technology are beginning to affect me, I love to get outside for a walk.

It doesn’t have to be a walk.

Whatever works for you.

There are plenty of great clubs and community activities you can get involved in. Kill two birds with one stone and get involved.

2/ Take Care of Your Screen eyes

One negative aspect of technology usage is screen eyes.

Looking at a screen all day can make your eyes feel tired and dry.

It’s pretty easy to combat this:

  • Get yourself some eye drops to refresh your eyes
  • Take regular screen breaks and make sure you’re looking far into the distance to help your eyes reset
  • Try some anti-screen eyes glasses

Your eyes are essential, so make sure you’re looking after them

3/ Have blackout times

Technology blackout times can be a great way to get out of the social media bubble. Take a day off each week and use the additional time to catch up on all those things you don’t have time.

This will help you escape the negative effects of technology.

4/ Get Yourself Into Some Art and culture

I love getting out to a gallery.

Being surrounded by art and culture can be really inspiring.

I think you’ll find that when you get home your creativity has been able to reset and you’re ready to change the world!

5/ Talk to someone you trust

If things really are getting overwhelming, don’t be afraid to talk to someone about it.

When you are feeling down and aren’t sure where to turn, it is crucial you can talk to someone about it.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family or even a professional.

You don’t have to suffer in silence. And you shouldn’t.

But you shouldn’t have to suffer. I know it can be hard to switch off from technology, but it’s definitely worth it.

When things are getting too much for you try:

  • Get outside
  • Save your screen eyes
  • Have blackout time
  • Experience Art and Culture
  • Speak to someone
